Uploading photos in a JPEG Format from iPhone instead of HEIC
Overview
Due to recent changes in the way Apple handles photo formats on iPhones, images uploaded from an iPhone into Trak may now appear in HEIC format. While this format is efficient and high-quality, it can cause compatibility issues for users on Microsoft Windows devices as many Windows PCs cannot open HEIC files by default, which may cause the images uploaded to Trak to be unreadable unless additional software is installed.
This article explains why this happens and how you can prevent it.
How This Affects Windows Users
If you’re using a Microsoft Windows PC, you may notice:
- Some uploaded photos won’t open
- You receive errors stating the file type is not supported
- You may be prompted to download additional software or extensions
How to Prevent HEIC Photo Uploads
To avoid compatibility issues, you can change your iPhone’s camera settings so photos save in JPEG instead of HEIC.
Steps (iPhone):
- Open Settings
- Tap Camera
- Tap Formats
- Change High Efficiency → Most Compatible
Switching to Most Compatible ensures that future photos are saved as JPEG, a format supported by all Windows devices and fully compatible with Trak.
